On Sunday 26th October 2008, Baska Karate (our association) held their annual course and grading in the Birkenshaw Sports Barn (Uddingston). The Kugatsu Karate-Do were well represented with over 25 of our members participating in what was a most enjoyable course. Senior Instructors from Baska Karate lead students in a variety of activities and sessions covering kata, sparring and practical self defence. Following the 5 hour course, our own Mark Marshall put himself forward for his San-Dan (3rd Dan) grading in front of Sensei Billy Haggarty (5th Dan), Sensei John Riley (5th Dan), Sensei Bobby Morton (6th Dan) and our Chief Instructor Sensei Graham McCann. His grading lasted over one and a half hours and covered basics, shukokai combinations, padwork, kata and kumite. To his credit Mark performed exceptionally well; the outcome of which was a well deserved promotion to San-Dan (3rd Dan black belt). Another highlight of the course was the decison of the senior members of Baska Karate to promote Sensei Graham McCann to Go-Dan (5th Dan black belt) in recognition of his work for and on behalf of Baska Karate and his on-going efforts to continually devleop and sustain the high standards of the members of the Kugatsu Karate-Do.
Sharon and Mark travelled along with our Chief Instructor Graham McCann to Cheshunt (north of London) to take part in this year's BIKO British Open Karate Championships. Sharon performed Gojushiho in round one (the first time she had used this kata in competition) and comfortably progressed to the final round as one of the highest scoring competitors. In the final round, she performed a strong Annan to take first place in the Senior Female Kata event by 0.1 over a highly rated kata competitor from England. Mark continued his recent outstanding success in competitons by comfortably taking first place in a strong Senior Male Kata event; he performed Heiku in round one and Annan in the final. Congratulations and well done to Sharon and Mark from all at the KKD.
Mark was our only competitor from the Kugatsu Karate-Do taking part in this years BKF British Karate Championships held in Sheffield on 6th and 7th September. Compteting in the veterens kata section, Mark performed superbly and was narrowly beaten into 2nd place. Mark performed Heiku in the quarter finals, Annan in the semi's and Gojushiho in the final. Hot on the heals of success in Sheffield, Mark had continued success in the Senior Male Kata event at the Scottish Karate Grand Prix on 14th September in Wishaw. Congratulations and well done from all at the KKD.
Steve O'Rawe runs the 10K and raises funds for the Kugatsu Karate-Do A great debt of thanks is owed to Steve O'Rawe (Rowan and Sean's dad) for offering to raise funds for the club. Steve approached Graham with the idea of obtainbing sponsorship for the Kugatsu Karate-Do a few weeks before he was due to run in the Glasgow 10K race. Steve completed the 10K in a impressive time of under 46 minutes. The total amount of money raised was just short of £180.00.
The 4th Commonwealth Karate Championships were held on 31st May & 1st June in Edinburgh; the event attracted over1300 competitiors from nine contries. Sharon McCann, Mark Marshall and Bryan McCann were competing in the open events. Sharon secured a bronze medal in the Ladies Team Kumite (Open event) compteting alongside Kirsty McLeod (Kokusai) and Mel Curle (SKF). Another highlight of the event for the Kugatsu Karate-Do was Graham McCann being selected to judge the Male Kata Final (Elite event). Well done to all the members of the club involved.
Several members of the Kugatsu Karate-Do were recently competing in this year’s two major karate competitions for University students. On the 15th and 16th March, Bryan and Sharon McCann along with Nick Krsteff were in Sheffield to compete in the British University Championships. Bryan battled his way through the senior male kata event to take a well deserved 3rd place; a great achievement given Bryan was one of 44 competitors! Nick was competing in the senior male kumite event; finishing in 5th place following some hard fought rounds. In the senior female kata event, Sharon was unlucky to finish in 5th place having been drawn in the stronger of the two pools. Building on her good kata performance, Sharon went on to take part in both the individual and team kumite sections. Sharon fought well in the individual event finishing in 3rd place. In the team event, Sharon was part of the Napier University Team along with Kirsty McLeod (Kokusai) and Mel Curle (Scottish Karate Federation) who were crowned British University Champions. Building on their successes at the British, Bryan, Sharon and Nick took part in the Scottish University Championships which were held in Glasgow’s Caledonian University on 26th April. Once again all three were a credit to the Kugatsu Karate=Do and their respective Universities. Sharon - 1st Place Female Team Kumite (Napier University) Nick - 2nd place Male Team Kumite (The University of Glasgow) Bryan - 3rd place Senior Male Kata The Napier University Kumite Team also won the Scottish Team Kumite League 2008. |
